New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat as they look to wrap up the series in game three against Pakistan in Dunedin on Saturday.
"It looks like a good surface," host captain Kane Williamson said.
"Hopefully we can make the most of it first up."
New Zealand have kept the same side that won the first two games of the five-match series, both rain affected, winning the opening game batting first and the second by batting last.
There is also the prospect of rain late in the day in Dunedin.
Pakistan have made one change, with form batsman Fakhar Zaman recovering from his thigh injury and returning to the side as Imam ul-Haq drops out.
