The death toll from forest fires which have ravaged forests in northern and central Portugal for the past 24 hours has risen to 27, the civil protection agency said Monday. 

"We can confirm the deaths of 27 people in the districts of Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Viseu and Guarda," said agency spokeswoman Patricia Gaspar, updating an earlier figure of 20 dead
