The State Department Friday released a first batch of emails by former top diplomat Hillary Clinton relating to Libya and a 2012 militant attack on the US mission in Benghazi.

The emails stoked fresh controversy after it was revealed that Clinton -- now a presidential hopeful -- had used a private server and email address during her four-year tenure as secretary of state from 2009 to 2012.
