The White House called on Burundians to lay down arms Wednesday, after an attempted coup prompted by President Pierre Nkurunziza's controversial bid for a third term.

"The United States is following with concern the news coming out of Bujumbura," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest. "We call on all sides to lay down arms, end the violence and show restraint."
