The United States has opened a federal hate crimes investigation into the shooting deaths of nine worshippers at a black church in the southeastern city of Charleston, a Justice Department spokesperson said Thursday.

The announcement of the probe led by the Justice Department's civil rights division and the Federal Bureau of Investigation comes as police hunted for the suspected gunman, a white male believed to be in his early 20s.
