Russian theatre and film director Kirill Serebrennikov on Wednesday was put under house arrest, the day after being charged with defrauding the state in a case he has called absurd.

Judge Yelena Lenskaya ruled to confine the acclaimed director to house arrest until October 19, an AFP correspondent reported from the courtroom as hundreds of people cried "Shame!" outside the courthouse.
