Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday said Russia must strive to be a leader in building a "new-generation" army to protect its sovereignty and foreign policy, particularly near its borders.

"Russia must be among the leading countries, and in some areas the absolute leader, when it comes to building a new-generation army," Putin said at a meeting of Russia's top military brass. "This is important to ensure our sovereignty."
