French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute Friday to former chancellor Helmut Kohl on Friday, saying the dead German leader was a "great European".

Macron posted a picture of Kohl standing with late French president Francois Mitterrand on Twitter, adding: "An architect of united Germany and Franco-German friendship: with Helmut Kohl, we have lost a great European."
