Former German chancellor Helmut Kohl is in intensive care in a hospital in the southwestern city of Heidelberg after undergoing surgery, media reports said Tuesday, citing his entourage.

The 85-year-old conservative elder statesman, known as the father of German reunification, underwent an intestinal operation and is in a "critical" condition, news outlet Spiegel Online said.
