Police fired shots and tear gas to disperse hundreds of anti-government protesters who gathered in the centre of Burundi's capital on Wednesday.

An AFP correspondent at the scene said police fired warning shots and tear gas to break up the protest, the first major crowd to reach Bujumbura's main square.
