At least three soldiers were killed in Burundi Thursday during intense battles between rival army factions after a coup attempt, an AFP journalist who saw the bodies on the streets said.

Bouts of heavy gunfire were heard throughout Thursday, but the bodies are the first recorded deaths since heavy fighting began late Wednesday. It was not clear whether those killed were loyal to the coup leader or the president, but it takes the toll of those killed since late April to more than 25.
