Democrat Doug Jones was officially declared the winner of the US Senate race in Alabama by election officials in the southern US state on Thursday.

The formal certification of the results came despite claims of election fraud by the defeated Republican candidate, Roy Moore.

With Jones' election, Republicans now hold 51 seats in the US Senate and the Democrats 49.
