Pop singer Meghan Trainor's debut album has opened at number one on the US charts, with the popularity of her breakaway hit "All About That Bass" helping dethrone Taylor Swift.
Nielsen Soundscan said that Trainor's album "Title" sold 238,000 copies, either in traditional sales or the equivalent through streaming and song purchases, in the week ending Sunday.
Trainor, who recently turned 21, was recognized for her musical skills at an early age. Her career took off last year when "All About That Bass," a pop tune with a catchy rhythm line, became a global sensation in part by going viral on streaming platforms.
"Title" opened at number one on the Billboard chart released late Wednesday, pushing to number two Taylor Swift's "1989" which enjoyed nine non-consecutive weeks at number one and was by far the top-selling album released in 2014.
Billboard said that "Title" was the strongest debut for a female pop artist since the 2009 first album by Susan Boyle, the frumpy Scot who became an overnight sensation through a television contest as her powerful voice belied her appearance.
