Damascus - Arab Today

More than 20,000 people were forced to flee their homes amid intense fighting in the Syrian city of Aleppo in the past 72 hours, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.

"It is estimated that around 60,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Aleppo since August. Twenty thousand fled just over the past 72 hours. Many more thousands left before," read an ICRC statement obtained by the Russian news agency TASS.

The western part of Aleppo has seen more than 40,000 people flee areas of clashes, first in the southwest part of Ramousseh, and later from western parts of the city, such as New Aleppo, Menyan and Al Hamdaniyeh neighborhoods.

In the East, intensified attacks on forced 20,000 people to flee homes in the neighborhoods of Masakan Hananoo, Jabal Jabro and Sakhour.

"The majority of those who flee are families, including many with infants and young children," ICRC said.

According to the Red Cross, Aleppo used to be home to more than 2 million people in the past, however, it is impossible to say how may of them still live in the besieged city.
