Switzerland’s population increased by 1.1% at the end of 2010, according to the official census results published here Thursday. The country’s permanent resident population at 2010 end stood at 7,870,100 people, an increase of 84,300 persons over 2009 census figure, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) report said. The 1.1% rate of increase is comparable to figures of 2007 and 2009. A quarter of the people living in Switzerland were born abroad and immigrated to our country. One out of eight inhabitants lives in one of the five large cities of Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Lausanne and Bern, the report based on administrative registers and specifically on the new Population and Household Statistics (STATPOP), added.
