US stocks closed lower on Monday, the first trading day of the fourth quarter, as investors digested key economic news and kept an eye on oil prices.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 54.30 points, or 0.30%, to close at 18,253.85, with Travelers Companies leading decliners and DuPont the top advancer. The S&P 500 fell 7.07 points, or 0.33%, to end at 2,161.20, with real estate leading eight sectors lower and telecommunications the greatest riser. The Nasdaq slid 11.13 points, or 0.21%, to close at 5,300.87.
