Tokyo shares opened lower Wednesday on weak U.S. stocks overnight as well as the stronger yen against the U.S. dollar.
As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 55.10 points, or 0.29 percent, from Tuesday to 18,758.43.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 5.06 points, or 0.34 percent, to 1,504.04.
Decliners were led by rubber product, insurance and bank issues.
