Tokyo shares opened lower on Thursday as market sentiment was dampened by the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar which hurt exporters.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 13.37 points, or 0.07 percent, from Wednesday to 19,134.71.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 0.15 points, or 0.01 percent, to 1,527.62.
Decliners were led by mining, electric power and gas, and transportation equipment issues.
