Tokyo shares fell Thursday morning with market sentiment dampened by the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 199.51 points, or 1.20 percent, from Wednesday to 16,414.73.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 13.94 points, or 1.06 percent, to 1,300.80.
Decliners were led by real estate, securities and banking issues.
