The Indian stock benchmark Sensex closed down 236.07 points or 1.38 percent Tuesday on losses of realty shares. The index slipped into deep losses in the second half of the session and concluded at 16,882.67 points with daily low at 16,837. 56 points. Realty, capital goods, power and banking sector lost 5.22 percent, 2.77 percent, 2.14 percent and 2.02 percent, respectively. Property developer DLF, Jaiprakash Associates, automobile maker Mahindra and Mahindra and ICICI Bank slumped 6.66 percent, 5.84 percent, 3.97 percent and 3.7 percent. Still, drug maker CIPLA, Tata Motors and HDFC Bank gained 6.51 percent, 1.91 percent and 0.23 percent. The turnover with Sensex totaled 140.7 million U.S. dollars Tuesday from 133.9 million U.S. dollars in the previous session. Sensex is the common name for the Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index. It consists of the 30 largest and most actively traded stocks, representative of various sectors, on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
