Sharjah Investment and Development Authority
Dubai - WAM

The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), the Sharjah government authority responsible for positioning the Emirate as a tourism and investment hub, reconfirmed its commitment to employing the highest sustainability and energy reduction standards in all of its current and future projects.

Shurooq has been at the forefront of energy preservation since it was established in 2009, having switched all lighting systems in Al Qasba from traditional light bulb to LEDs, resulting in a 93% reduction in power consumption.

Earlier this year, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) to boost cooperation between the two authorities in the fields of energy conservation, protecting the environment and attracting investors in the fields of renewable and alternative energies.

The MoU is aimed at finding solutions for renewable and alternative energy sources; co-organising events that aim to attract renewable energy investors and experts, and creating an ideal environment that encourage green investments in Sharjah Commenting on the subject, Marwan Jassim Al Sarkal, Chief Executive Officer of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), said, "We are fully committed to ensuring the sustainability of our projects and developments, including the Kalbda Eco-Tourism Project, the Mleiha Eco-Tourism Project, Al Noor Island and Sir Bu Nuair Island, to name a few of our eco-friendly projects.

"We continue to work with our various partners and other parties to launch and employ new initiatives aimed at lowering our projects carbon footprint, through using renewable and environment-friendly energy resources, as well as energy-saving technologies. In addition, our goal is to put Sharjah at the forefront of green practices, through attracting investors interested in this area".

In addition to employing the latest technologies in energy saving, Shurooq utilises environment-friendly solutions and recycled materials. Late 2012, Shurooq unveiled its eco-friendly running track at Al Majaz Waterfront in Sharjah. The 3,000 square metre, which was completed using 6,000 recycled tires, was launched in cooperation with Bee'ah, the Middle East's leading integrated environmental and waste management company.
