South Koreans' direct purchases from foreign countries edged up in the second quarter of this year, with online purchases of Korean products by overseas shoppers nearly doubling, government data showed Wednesday.
Koreans' direct purchases of foreign goods via overseas online shopping malls reached 411.8 billion won about US$369.3 million during the April-June period, up 5% from 392 billion won a year ago, according to the data compiled by Statistics Korea.
At the same time, internet-based direct sales made by overseas shoppers surged 83% on-year to 487.4 billion won in the second quarter.
South Koreans' purchases of US goods fell 6.8% on-year to 266.9 billion won over the three-month period, while those from the European Union jumped 30.1% to 79.2 billion won, South Korea's News Agency (Yonhap) reported.
Their spending on foreign foodstuffs soared 30.2% on-year to 107.1 billion won and mobile devices and home appliances rose 22.1% to 35.1 billion won over the cited period.
On the other hand, Chinese people are the biggest buyers of South Korean products, as they bought 373.2 billion won worth of Korean-made goods online over the three-month period, up 103.1% from a year earlier.
Some 333.3 billion won worth of South Korean cosmetics were sold overseas through the internet in the second quarter, up 124.2% on-year, while sales of clothes soared 53.2% on-year to 87.5 billion won.
Meanwhile, South Korea's overall online shopping sales stood at 5.18 trillion won in June, up 18.8% from a year earlier, while mobile transactions surged 34.4% on-year to 2.65 trillion won, accounting for 51.2% of all online sales, said the statistics agency.
