Danish giant container vessel "Mary Maersk" transited the Suez Canal Monday as part of the south-bound convoy coming from The Netherlands via the Mediterranean Sea en route to the Red Sea with about 18.270 containers on board.
In statements, a shipping official source at the Suez Canal Authority said that the 400-meter-high container ship crossed the water way with a total cargo load of about 200.000 tons.
The ship was escorted a tow boat affiliated to the Suez Canal Authority during its 12-hour trip for emergency cases.
The vessel docked in Port Said for several hours to refuel and unload number of its containers before resuming its trip to the Red Sea then to Singapore, the source noted.
