The Ministry of Works participated in the Bahraini Fisherman Day Festival, organized by the Ministry of Municipalities and Urban Planning and patronized by HRH the Crown Prince’s son Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa. The festival takes place from 13-15 November 2014; as part of efforts to support fishermen and provide high quality services to them.
The Ministry’s participation supports its role as an essential partner in serving fishermen and maintaining the marine environment through the construction of several ports across the Kingdom. All ports in the Kingdom attracted much attention from the Government when it comes to planning and providing all requirements and basic facilities, all of which reflect Bahrain’s history in fishing and riding the sea.
The Ministry displayed photos of fishing ports in its section at the festival, which highlighted Budaiya, Sitra, Muharraq and Askar ports and Hawar jetty. The Ministry implemented Budaiya, Sitra, Muharraq and Askar fishing ports.
In 2005, the Ministry constructed Budaiya Port, which accommodates 138 boats and 12 dhows, Sitra Port; accommodating 169 boats and 140 dhows, and Muharraq Port; accommodating 150 boats and 120 dhows. In March 2013, the Ministry also completed Hawar Jetty, which accommodates 20 boats, plus Coastguard jetty for 2 boats, and jetty for hotel ferry.
In June 2014, the Ministry completed Askar Port, which accommodates 150 boats. It has start work to design Dimistan port this year. The new facility is expected to accommodate 250 small boats, 2 sailboats and 2 coastguard boats.
All ports contain public facilities such as coastguard building, cafeteria, sheds, commercial shops, a prayer facility, workshops, stores and parking lot; in line with the requirements of the Ministry of Municipalities & Urban Planning, represented by the Fisheries Directorate.
