The National Assembly approved on Wednesday a draft proposal to make appropriate amendments on the 1993 housing law and the 1995 law regarding allowing the private sector to take part in using state-owned land to be invested in housing projects of immediate benefit to the public.
National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim, in a speech after the approval vote, said the amendments were a momentous achievement brokered in unison by the government and the National Assembly, noting that the current assembly, in power for only one year, has been able with the present improvements on the housing law to enable providing more than twelve thousand housing units for Kuwaiti home seekers.
In a similar speech, State Minister of Housing Yasser Abul denied that there was a real housing crunch in the country, saying that land and the wherewithal to build homes were both amply available to the government.
He said the highly important amendments passed by the lawmakers today would go very far in solving any existing housing problems, but he appealed to everyone to exercise patience as providing homes to thousands of Kuwaiti citizens every year would take time.
He expressed appreciation for the efforts exerted by both the lawmakers and the government in reaching mid-points leading to today's crucial housing amendments that will subsequently translate into desirable realities on the ground for thousands of Kuwaiti citizens waiting anxiously to have houses to live in with their families
