Road fatalities in Dubai
Abu Dhabi - WAM

Road fatalities in Dubai went down during the first four months of this year with 48 deaths recorded as compared to 65 during the same period last year - a drop of 26.15 per cent.

This was stated by Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, assistant commander-in-chief of the Dubai Police for Operations Affairs.

He attributed the drop in fatalities to road safety awareness campaigns, introduction of traffic control systems and the launch of motivational initiatives for motorists.

He hoped that the mortality index will reduce further as compared to last year after implementation of the new traffic rules to come into effect in July 2017 which will see increased fines and enhanced confiscation periods and black points.

Al Zafeen pointed out that during January this year, the police recorded 17 deaths, while 10 people each were killed in February and March. In April, 11 fatalities were recorded.

He noted that last year, the Dubai traffic department recorded 198 fatalities due to traffic accidents, while in 2015, 166 deaths was recorded. The Dubai Police seeks to reduce the causes of accidents in the emirate, using the latest techniques of traffic control, including cameras and radars along the streets of Dubai.
