Rights court raps Russia for Kasparov arrest

The European Court of Human Rights on Thursday rapped Russia over the 2007 arrest of the former chess champion turned opposition activist Garry Kasparov. The court found that the arrest of Kasparov and eight other activists during a Moscow demonstration had been \"disproportionate to the aim of maintaining public order.\" It ruled that Russia had violated Articles 6-1 and 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights, covering the right to a fair trial, and freedom of assembly and association.
