A fairy and a young boy meet in Penelope Torribio’s children’s book “The Magic in You: From Vacant Lot to Community Garden” (published by Trafford Publishing), to create a community garden out of a trash-filled, vacant lot. While growing up in a low-income apartment building, the young boy encounters a nature fairy named Phloxie whose graduating gift from fairy school was the empty lot right outside the boy’s building. Although Phloxie was upset with her so-called gift, she works with the boy to beautify the empty space. Phloxie’s desire to fill the world with flowers, coupled with the boy’s helping hands, transforms the nearby vacant area into a community garden for the neighborhood to share. Torribio hopes “The Magic in You” will inspire children to become involved in the clean-up of litter and the establishment of community gardens in their own neighborhoods. “I believe every community should have one or more community gardens for so many reasons,” Torribio says. “The first is that people need to be in touch with nature and the process of growing things. The second is that it develops community pride and the third, it makes communities attractive.” “The Magic in You” will be displayed at the 2014 Bologna Children’s Book Fair from March 24 - 27.
