“Mimosas” directed by Morocco-based Oliver Laxe bagged the top prize — the Golden Pyramid Award for Best Film — at the 38th Cairo International Film Festival.
Writer-director Laxe has described the film as ‘a Muslim Western’. The film is a co-production between Spain, Morocco, France and Qatar.
The prizes were announced during the closing ceremony in Cairo on Thursday.
The Silver Pyramid Award went to “The Train of Salt and Sugar” by Licinio Azevedo (Portugal — Mozambique — France — South Africa — Brazil) while the Bronze Pyramid Award went to “Kills on Wheels” directed by Attila Till (Hungary); the Best Contribution Award went to “We Are Not Alone” by Peter Vaclav (Czech). The Best Actress award was won by Nahed El Sebai for her role in “A Day For Women” while Shakin Ben Omar won the Best Actor award for his role in “Mimosas”.
Naguib Mahfouz Award for Best Screenplay went to “Perfect Strangers” directed by Paolo Genovese (Italy).
