The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Commission for Controlling Desert Locust in the Central Region (CRC) celebrated its 50th anniversary under the patronage of Dr. Fouad bin Jaafar Al-Sajwani, Omani Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries.
In a press statement after opening the event, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries said that there is a close monitoring of the locust concentration areas, their movements and the risk levels they might pose, according to Oman News Agency (ONA).
He added that the Ministry takes all necessary precautionary measures to deal with locust emergencies. He affirmed that during the past years, the Sultanate was affected only by small number of local locust which were addressed properly and which did not have any significant effect on crops.
The celebration included a documentary on the commission and the efforts it has made over the past year and the role it plays in the coming year.
It should be noted that FAO Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in CRC will hold its 30th meeting and the 34th executive committee of the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in Muscat from February 20-23, ONA reported.
