The upcoming weekly concert of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra will take place on Saturday, 31 May, and will be conducted by Hisham Gabr. The first half of the evening includes work by a highly acclaimed composer, conductor and violinist from Denmark: Carl Nielsen's Aladdin, Suite FS 89. This incidental music to a theatrical production and fairy tale premiered on the stage of the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen in 1919. The second half of the evening will transport listeners to Symphony No 5 in D minor, Op 47, one of the most successful works by the great Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Hisham Gabr is conductor at the Cairo Opera House and director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina's Arts Centre, a dynamic cultural institution, part of the renowned Library of Alexandria. Gabr studied conducting in Egypt, France and the United States. Besides his regular commitments as conductor at the Cairo Opera House, Gabr is a regular guest conductor in many international orchestras. Source: Ahram Online
