Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau issued a warning Friday for Tropical Storm Fung-Wong, saying it would bring heavy rain and strong winds when it makes landfall late Saturday, the state-run Central News Agency reported.
Fung-Wong was centred 370 kilometres south of Taiwan's southernmost tip at 1200 GMT Friday and moving north-north-west, the bureau said. It forecast that Fung-Wong will make landfall in the southern county of Pingtung.
According to dpa, the bureau warned that large waves were likely to hit the country's southern, eastern and south-western coasts.
Taiwan's National Defence Ministry deployed about 400 soldiers in the eastern counties of Hualien and Tauitung in anticipation of possible rescue work.
Authorities in flood-prone areas in several cities, including Taipei, took preventive measures against flooding late Friday.
