The population of Austria is expected to pass 9 million for the first time in 2025 on the back of strong immigration, Statistics Austria revealed Thursday.
The statistics institute said without immigration, which contributed to a net population increase of 56,000 people in 2013 alone, the overall population figures would be in a decline.
The population is expected to reach 9.41 million by 2040, and 9.62 million by 2060. The figures mark a 13.4 percent increase over 2013, and is higher than the prediction of 9.37 million for 2060 Statistics Austria had last calculated.
Without immigration, the figures would have declined to 8.12 million by 2040 and 7.17 million by 2060.
The increased number of people is to be particularly centered in the capital Vienna, where it is expected the population will surpass the 2 million mark sometime between 2025 and 2030.
In 2013, there were 1.69 million people aged below 20, 5.24 million people of working age of between 20 and 65, and 1.54 million in the retiree age bracket.
Statistics Austria said from 2020, a noticeably larger number of people will be in the latter bracket due to the baby boomer generation retiring, coupled with an ever-increasing life expectancy age.
