A magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit southern Japanese islands on Tuesday, but no tsunami warning was issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property from the quake, which struck far underground at a depth of 220 kilometres. The seismic centre of the quake was off Ishigaki island, about 2,000 kilometres south-west of Tokyo, the agency said.
