A Ministry of Interior Media Department official said civil protection forces succeeded in extinguishing the fire that erupted in two fabric shops in the crowded and ancient neighborhood of Ghoureya in the wee hours of Wednesday.
There were no casualties and all necessary legal procedures were taken, he said.
Security and civil protection forces rushed to the scene upon receiving calls that a fire was raging in two shops in Ghoureya, Darb el Ahmar in central Cairo.
The area was secured, the fire controlled a cooling process is underway to make sure the fire does not spread to nearby areas, the official added.
A huge fire had erupted in a six-storey hotel in the neighboring commercial and over-crowded area of Ruwaei on Sunday.
It spread to nearby shops selling highly inflammable materials, including fabrics, clothing.
Dozens of people were injured and it took two days to control the fire.
