Unknown gunmen killed six Egyptian soldiers at a military police checkpoint near Cairo early Saturday, an official said. Two bombs allegedly planted by the attackers were disarmed by explosives experts after the shooting, Ahram Online reported. A military official told Ahram that four of the slain soldiers came from Upper Egypt's Sohag governorate, one from Menoufiya and the last from Beni Seuf. Egypt has seen a spike in violence since President Mohamed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, was removed from office in July. Military spokesman Ahmed Ali accused the Muslim Brotherhood of carrying out Saturday's attack, the BBC said. The banned political group has denied any involvement.
