Morocco’s General Union of Workers witnesses currently a critical period because of the increasing disputes among its leaders. These disputes pushed the union for the first time to boycott the celebrations of Labor Day on May 1. Recently, the union’s leading member Mayar Al Neam was elected to be its secretary general during exceptional conference.
Neam said that her election came a democratic and legal way during a transparent conference attended by members of the union’s general assembly which suspended the membership of former secretary general loyal to Hameed Shabat.
She added, in a statement to “Arabs Today”, that she was elected by prominent leaders who respect the rules of the union, saying that she has the documents that prove the legality of her position.
Regarding the decision taken by the Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party Hamid Shabat to suspend her membership, she said that he has not the right to take this step, accusing him of using thugs to achieve his objectives in illegal way.
He added, in a statement to “Arabs Today”, the Labor Day is a major event in which the Moroccan workers should raise their demands to the government to increase their salaries, to open the issue of unions’ freedoms and to reform of the pension system.
He blamed the government for lack of resources directed to workers and weakness of the governmental offer to the social activists, saying that the Labor Day is an occasion for protests not celebrations.
