Aksel Lund Svindal won the men's alpine World Cup super-G at Lake Louise on Sunday on an Olympic course the Norwegian has made his own. Svindal clocked 1min 28.53sec to beat Austrian Matthias Mayer by 0.24sec. Austrian Georg Streitberger was third, 0.38sec off the lead. Svindal notched his 22nd World Cup victory, surpassing Kjetil Andre Aamodt's Norwegian record. It was his sixth win in Lake Louise, five of those coming in the super-G, which he also won here in 2005, 2007, 2011 and 2012. Last year's triumph was part of a downhill/super-G double here. But Svindal was denied a podium finish in Saturday's opening downhill of the season, finishing fourth in the race won by Italy's Dominik Paris. Paris was unable to crack the top-20 on Sunday. With his latest success, the 11th World Cup super-G win of his career, 30-year-old Svindal seized the lead in the overall World Cup standings with 200 points, ahead of Austrian Marcel Hirscher on 160. He underscored his status as a favorite to defend the Olympic super-G title he won in Vancouver in 2010 at February's Sochi Games. Source: AFP
