Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar appealed to his countrymen on Tuesday to dedicate the National Sports Day to all Indian sportswomen who have done exceedingly well in major international events.
The National Sports Day is celebrated in India to mark the birth anniversary of Dhyan Chand, arguably the greatest hockey player of all time.
Dhyan Chand was a hockey magician whose skills and goals gave India three Olympics gold medals at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Summer Games. He was born on August 29, 1905.
On Tuesday, Tendulkar, arguably the second greatest batsman in history after the incomparable Don Bradman, took to Twitter to salute India's female athletes who have won medals at the highest level in recent years.
"We must all dedicate this #NationalSportsDay to the sportswomen of our country for making us proud in their respective fields. #LoveSports," the batting legend tweeted.
In recent times, a number of female athletes have made the country proud with their achievements at the highest level.
