South Africa, set a target of 481, were 40-1 at tea on the fourth day of the fourth and final Test against India on Sunday.
Opener Temba Bavuma was batting on 30 with skipper Hashim Amla unbeaten on six at New Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla ground.
India declared their second innings on 267-5 to set South Africa a massive target.
The hosts had bowled out the top-ranked tourists for 121 in their first innings after making 334.
India have already bagged the series with wins in the first and third Tests. The second Test in Bangalore was washed out after the first day's play.
