Lewis Hamilton captured the Canadian Grand Prix Sunday to close the gap in the Formula One championship on Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.
Rosberg could finish only fifth after he and Hamilton touched on the first turn, sending the German off the track and back down the field to 10th.
Hamilton's main rival was then Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who overtook both Mercedes drivers at the start but was left trailing by the team's two-stop pit strategy.
It was Hamilton's second win in a row following Monaco two weeks ago and gave him back-to-back wins at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, his fifth in Montreal and his 45th overall, dpa reported.
The win reduces Rosberg's lead over Hamilton in the standings to nine points.
Valtteri Bottas in a Williams was on the podium in third place - the first for the team this season - followed by Max Verstappen in a Red Bull.
Rosberg, who had to make an unscheduled pit stop on lap 52 with a slow puncture, span off the track after overtaking Verstappen on the last lap but recovered to keep fifth place.
Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was sixth, followed by Daniel Ricciardo in a Red Bull, Nico Huelkenberg (Force India), Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso) and Sergio Perez (Force India) in the top 10.
