Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development, received President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Sir Philip Craven at his palace on Saturday. Sir Philip on Friday chaired the IPC Governing Board meeting in Abu Dhabi for the first time in the region to discuss a wide-ranging issues regarding paralympic sports. Preparations for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games were also discussed during the meeting.
As he briefed Sheikh Nahyan on the outcome of the meeting for advancing the paralympic sports regionally and internationally, Sir Philip commended efforts being made by the UAE leadership to develop the para sports. He presented to Sheikh Nahyan a book on the IPC's achievements over the last quarter of century.
At its meeting in Abu Dhabi today, the IPC Governing Board approved a further six sports for inclusion in the Games, adding to the 16 sports that were ratified and announced after its meeting in October 2014. A maximum of 23 sports could have been included for 2020.
He thanked the UAE for hosting the meeting, adding that the UAE has become an important meeting place for the IPC.
