An exciting gameweek 17 of Qatar Stars League saw Al Sadd leapfrog Lekhwiya to the top of the league as the former overcame Umm Salal 4-1, while the champions lost to El Jaish 2-0 in the round's most prominent game.
Khalfan Ibrahim scored for Al Sadd from the spot on 14 minutes after Umm Salal's Waleed Ahmad was shown a straight red card for a foul inside the box. The hosts found it much easier from that moment on, adding a second on 33 minutes, again through Ibrahim.
The second half was no different - just three minutes into it, Hassan Al Haidos made it 3-0 and Nadir Belhadj sealed the win with a fourth goal on 66 minutes. Turkish forward Tuncay Sanli pulled one back for Umm Salal in the 86th minute but at that point it was a mere consolation for the guests.
The win took Al Sadd top of the league but Lekhwiya, playing later on against El Jaish, had their fate in their hands and could have returned top with a home win at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium. However, it was the guests who emerged victorious in a game that failed to live up to its expectation as the top game of the round.
Ricardo da Silva and Yasser Abou Baker were on target to seal a 2-0 win for El Jaish who climbed to third and awarded the league's top spot to Al Sadd in the process.
The round concludes Saturday with two games in which Al Shamal take on Al Arabi while Al Kharaitiyat play host to Al Wakrah.
