Granada have appointed former Atletico Madrid boss Abel Resino as their new coach until the end of the season following the dismissal of Fabri Gonzalez. The 51-year-old Resino takes over a Granada side who, having won promotion to the top flight last season for the first time in 35 years, are just a point above the relegation places after losing four of their last five Primera Division matches. A statement on the Granada website read: \"Granada announce the appointment of Abel Resino as their new coach until June 30. Abel will take charge of his first training session tomorrow, after which he will be presented to the media at the Nuevo Estadio de Los Carmenes.\" Resino, a former Spain international, started his coaching career in 2005 with Ciudad de Murcia before then having spells at Levante, Castellon, Atletico Madrid and, most recently, Real Valladolid. Resino replaces Gonzalez, who was sacked by Granada in the wake of Saturday\'s 3-0 away defeat to Espanyol. A statement from the club said: \"After a meeting held this afternoon between the sports director Juan Carlos Cordero and first-team coach Fabriciano Gonzalez it was decided to cease [the relationship] with the Galician technician. \"This is a painful decision for us. The club want to show our appreciation to Mr Gonzalez for his services, becoming part of the long history of the club, achieving two consecutive promotions.\" Fabri, 56, said today: \"I\'ve given all my effort to try and make this team work. But results are what decide the coach\'s future and recently they have not been as good as we would have wanted. I\'ve been very happy [here] and I hope that this decision will be positive for Granada.\" Granada are away to Real Betis in their next match on Sunday.
