Gil Vicente put clear ground between themselves and the relegation zone with a comfortable 2-0 win over Sporting Lisbon on Monday. Rodrigo Galo gave the hosts the lead in the 13th minute and Carolino Claudio made sure of the points with a penalty 10 minutes into the second half. Any hopes Sporting had of a dramatic comeback were dashed by the 69th-minute dismissal of Stijn Schaars for a second bookable offence. The win lifts Gil Vicente eight points above the drop zone and comfortably into mid-table, while Sporting, fifth, missed the chance to move above Maritimo.
