AEL Limassol clinched victory in the Cypriot league title race for the first time in 44 years today, earning them a chance to emulate the exloits of APOEL Nicosia in next season's UEFA Champions League. With one match of the season still to play, Limassol's 1-0 defeat of Anorthosis Famagusta gave them an unassailable three-point lead over their nearest rivals, Omonia Nicosia and APOEL. Whatever happens on next weekend's final day, both Nicosia sides, as well as fourth-placed Anorthosis Famagusta, are guaranteed berths in next season's UEFA Europa League. Limassol will also face Omonia in the Cypriot Cup final on 16 May. APOEL became the first Cypriot side to go beyond the Champions League group phase earlier this season and went on to eliminate Lyon in the last 16 before falling to nine-time winners Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
