The students have mobilised to bring attention to the deteriorating Italian school system, which they believe is critically underfunded. Student protests are also occurring in over 80 other cities across Italy. The students believe that government funding has been misallocated since funding for education is quite minimal while the country continues to waste financial resources on things like the military. The Coordinator of the National Union of Students, Roberto Campanelli, spoke of the national problem of underfunding public schools, citing that students are ignored while government funding goes to \"protecting speculators and large estates.\" He stated that \"there is no more time to waste with austerity policies.\" In Milan, students gathered in the Piaza Cairoli and proceeded to march through the city\'s streets, impeding the flow of traffic.
