The Coptic Orthodox Church under Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria and Patriarch of St. Mark Diocese mourned the death of eight policemen, who were killed while on patrol in the capital's southern district of Helwan in the early hours of Sunday.
In a statement Monday, the Church mourns the martyrs of policemen, who sacrifice their lives to protect homeland from terrorism.
The Egyptian people will always be united in face of terrorism, added the statement.
Eight policemen were shot dead by masked gunmen in Helwan early on Sunday.
The victims were traveling in a white mini-bus when gunmen dismounted from a pick-up truck, stopped the unmarked police vehicle and opened fire.
The policemen, who were in plain clothes, were on their way to take part in the arrest of some criminals.
