Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam
Abu Dhabi - Emirates Voice

Editors of leading UAE newspapers have lauded the groundbreaking achievements of the media pioneer Dr Abdullah Omran Taryam.
A report in Gulf News quoted Abdul Hamid Ahmad, editor-in-chief of Gulf News, as saying: “We are distressed by the death of Dr Taryam. [The loss of] Dr Taryam is overwhelming as he was a pioneer in the media field.”
Ahmad added that as minister of justice and education, Dr Taryam used his position to build a strong foundation at the ministries. He continued to be active in the political, government, national and media scenes through Dar Al Khaleej.
Ahmad also pointed out that Dr Taryam used his newspaper to defend issues of the Arab nation and nationalism, and set up a school that educated many Arab writers and journalists.
Daen Shaheen, editor-in-chief of Al Bayan, said that Dr Taryam’s death is a great loss because he was not only a pioneer of the local press, but also one of its founders. “Our consolation is that he founded, along with his late brother Taryam Omran, the foundations for a free and fair press that gave the industry in the UAE Arab and national dimensions,” he said.
Shaheen added that no one can talk about the UAE press without recognising the huge impact of the Taryam brothers, the report added.
Sami Al Riyami, editor of Emirates Today, highlighted the role Dr Taryam played in both the cultural and humanitarian fields, and his writings regarding UAE education and development, apart from his other intellectual and political articles.
Mustafa Al Zarouni of Khaleej Times said Dr Taryam participated with decision-makers to build public institutions, including the ministries of education and justice.
Abdul Rahman Al Shumairi, Al Watan’s executive editor-in-chief, said Dr Taryam was able to enhance the position of the UAE press through his continuous efforts.
