A 32-year-old housemaid faced a theft charge on Thursday for allegedly stealing, with the help of a countryman, large sums of money and gold from a family.
The Bangladeshi housemaid was at the Pakistani family's house when she stole 85,000SR and $5,000 and Dh140,220 worth of gold jewellery.
A Bangladeshi vegetable and fruit vendor, aged 46, is also charged in the Court of First Instance with helping her in the theft.
The incident took place on April 2 in Al Qusais.
The Pakistani complainant, an administrative employee, aged 31, said: "Around 10am, I told the watchman to bring the housemaid to work at my house by hour system as I was not her sponsor and had no idea about her legal status. She came to my place while I left for work and my wife and children also went out. She was left alone there with my elderly mother who was praying in the main room."
The following day, the maid did not show up at their house at the time previously agreed on.
"My wife then checked the closet and found that 85,000 SR and $5,000, in addition to gold worth Dh140,220 which was kept in a safe, were all gone. I reported her to Al Qusais police station," he told the prosecution investigators.
Both accused were caught on April 5. She confessed to the police when confronted by the complainant and claimed the vendor helped her. Part of the stolen jewellery was found with her.
